    Clip to ScrapBook

My classes hated Caddie Woodlawn (my favorite as a child), so I have finally given it up. They definitely like things more current.

I use Hoot each year, and almost all of the kids love it (there are always a few nay-sayers). I've had a lot of kids say it was the best book they ever read in school, and a few that say it's their favorite book ever. (interestingly enough, most of them don't really like the main character, Roy). I like it b/c it has environmental issues (timely, and they are at an age where they realize they can do something about it), bullying issues, moving to a new place issues, being friends w/ the opposite sex, etc. It also shows things from different points of view (a few of the main characters are adults, some are "good" guys, and some are "bad").

We always have them read "Number the Stars" over the summer, and they always seem to really like that one.
