I just finished my student teaching in a 3rd grade class and I used plenty of praise. I had rules and cosequences but I also focused on the good behavior. I also used a marble jar and when the class as a whole was on task I would give them marbles, when the jar was full they got a ice cream party or some sort of treat/reward. Good luck and whatever you decide to use, BE consistent!
