I am not in Texas either -- I'm a Mississippi girl. This will be the first year our 4th grade is departmentalized, so it will keep the Language Arts block -- well, in a block!

    Reading -- 30 minutes
    Vocabulary -- 15 minutes
Syllabication or Roots & Affixes Practice -- 15 minutes
    Grammar -- 30 minutes
    Writing -- 30 - 40 minutes

Two days a week my kids do work stations, rotating for 20 minutes among the 5 stations. This year I plan to have them do many individual stations, but there will be 1 - 2 where they work as groups.

The workstations will include: grammar/editing sentences practice, writing, prefix/suffix/root practice, scavenger hunts in their grammar and reading books, dictionary/thesuarus hunts, newspaper scavenger hunts, sentence diagraming, use of SmartBoard (group), etc.

I recently purchased sentence rods and affix rods to work as some hands' - on stations.

I always have my English quiz on Thursdays, speling pretests on Thursdays, reading and spelling tests on Fridays, word skills quiz on Monday or Tuesday. Any of these can be done during individual work stations.

Have you visited Mrs. Renz' website? or Beth Newingham or Mrs. Jasztal? Great language arts ideas!
