Homework is always tricky at the second grade level. I have been using a homework packet for the past 5+ years. I have been very pleased with the return of homework. My homework is very routine and must be turned in each day. I check over it and send the Homework Packet home each night. I do not let them work ahead becasue I want to establish a routine for nightly homework which becomes more important as they advance in grades.

Included in the packet is a list of spelling and vocabulary words for our weekly basal story, and a list of homework assignments for the week. It looks something like this. Everything that they need is included in this packet.

Nightly Homework: Study spelling and vocabulary words as needed. Record all nightly reading on your weekly reading log.
