I usually jump right in with as much real teaching as I can (math and Language Arts).

read First Day Jitters and predict/respond to the story. This is practice for their response journals which they will do every day throughout the year.

Students write a letter to me in response to the one I leave on their desk - they tell me about themselves, favorite things, whatever they want me to know about themselves.

Introduce/explain/practice procedures and establish rules together

begin Words their Way and DRA assessments

First math lesson: fill out mult chart and find out which facts students don't know... students make their own set of flash cards for ones they don't know.

In the past, I've also had students make a personalized license plate.... has to be 7 characters or less and tell something about what they like to do or their personality for example, mine might be: luv2tch
You know how on a real license plate there are stickers showing the exp. dates? They put their birth day and month instead, and write the name of the state or country in which they were born along the bottom.
This makes a great hallway or classroom display.

I usually don't do science or social studies the first day.
