On our easel I write a morning message in the morning for when they come in. It is very easy to read at the beginning of the year and then it gets harder. Here's an example:

    Good Morning!

    Today is Monday.
We are going to PE. Hooray!
Write your name (then I put an arrow)

They read the message in the morning and then do the activity I ask. For awhile its just practicing their name. They write it once on the easel. Then we can use it for attendance. I use very repetitive messages the first few months while we are learning to read. Later, the messages get harder, something like this:

    G_ _ d Morning, super students!

    I hop _ you _ _ _ a nice weekend.

Tod_ _ we will do a fun experiment in science.

When we gather as a group during our morning meeting, they come up and help me finish the message by filling in sounds or words that we know. Often I will also put little quick math games like tallies or a sight word hangman up to incorporate some more learning into the message.
There are great books about morning message on amazon too!
