I do Morning Message whole class. For my entering first graders, it would take forever to copy the sentences so it's not something I do. I write the message on chart paper and leave out letters, punctuation, words, etc. I usually write it in the form of a letter. I always include the date and day of the week. Then I usually write something that we'll be doing that day. I call individual students to come up and fix the errors. I start off pretty easy. Often at the beginning of the year, I'll just write the message and have students just come up and circle letters or words they know. Then I might leave out beginning letters, etc. In my Morning Message, I try to focus on whatever skills we're working on in word work or writing. I keep it pretty short and sweet.

To keep my kiddos involved, I have them all bring white boards to the rug when we do Morning Message. When one student comes up to write in a missing word or letter, they do it on their white boards. I don't have them copy the message, though.

I don't use journals, but if that's what you want to do maybe you can type up the morning message and copy it for each child. They could add it each day to Morning Message binders.
