This will be my fourth year using binders in first grade. I absolutely love them , as do the kids and parents. I change the name each year to go with my theme. I have has a BEAR Book, CAMP Book, and STAR Book. This year I will have a JUNGLE Book. The kids do very well with them. During the first week of school, I explain how the binder works. We talk about each section and practice using it. I have a money pouch which is just a pencil bag. I have a vinyl, velcro closure book pocket that I get from School Specialty. I use Avery two pocket insertable plastic dividers for homework and work to keep at home. I have several page protectors with various things in them, dolch word lists, spelling word lists for the quarter, school rules, school year calendar, jungle book rules, etc. The front pocket of the binder is used for important notes from school and the back one is for absent notes. I have always used 1" binders because we had a schoolwide planner that we put in it also, but this year we don't have the planner, so I am using 1/2" binders. The 1" seem to pop open too easily and that gets frustrating for the kids, as well as myself, to have to pick everything up and get it back in the binder. I think the 1/2" will be perfect and won't pop open as easily. I get mine from Sam's Club. They come 8 in a box and they are around $11.00 a box. Much cheaper than anywhere else I have checked. I am actually going over to pick mine up today and get started on them. They are a great investment and I highly recommend using them. Also, the kids are great at bringing them every day. I reward them with a sticker on their incentive chart each day they have it. I almost never have a kid forget it or lose it. Good luck!
