    I have to disagree, Nancy

I teach mostly highschool and while I always bring a book (almost all English classes, particularly in inner-city schools, have 15 to 20 min. of uninterrupted silent reading, and I feel teachers should set the example of reading also), I never read when the class is working. Even if it's a subject that I know little or nothing about, I really try to interact with the students. I'll ask them what they've been working on or to show me what they've done so far or to explain to me what it is that they're doing. Explaining something to someone who doesn't understand it (which is what teaching is all about) actually helps some students understand better what it is they are doing, or helps them be able to put it into words, rather than just saying "well, ya' know....". And I suppose that I'm very sensitive about claims that subs are only babysitters, so I feel that sitting and reading a book for 45 minutes or an hour and a quarter is not very professional. I'm there as a teacher, albeit a substitute, and while I may not know alot about a particular subject, I feel that I can still encourage communication, appropriate interaction and other important skills while the students work.
