My 1st graders had "Poetry Cafe" on Fridays. They had an ongoing collection of poems in a poetry folder inside their desk. Thoughout the week, we worked and practice one particular poem and they had a chance on Friday to practice a previous one. During our "cafe", the lights were dimmed and the overhead turned on. (I have some really cool scenery overheads I got many moons ago). The children came up one by one and read a poem they have practiced. We always clapped the "golf clap" - just like they do in real poetry readings at a coffee shop.

This cafe idea was a "teachable" moment that has led to one of my students' favorite activities. They actually get upset when I forget to do it on Friday's.

Sometimes, we have a snack. And one year, I had the parents come and join in during a end of the year cafe get together. Every year it gets better as the children and I add ideas. I am new to this site, so from what I am reading - many of yall will really help me make Poetry Cafe MUCH better. Thank you in advance for any extra ideas.
