Dressing to sub
By Mariella

Clip to ScrapBook
I guess I go a bit against the trend here - I tend to dress much better than the regular teachers. There's that old saying "You only get one chance to make a first impression" and since students (and some staff) tend to
think than an unknown sub is maybe a bit less than professional or on the ball, I feel it's important to be well dressed. Children respond well to someone nicely dressed (just like the rest of us) and so do staff members. I carry running shoes in my car but haven't needed them (schools here have phys ed teachers). I like to sew (make many of my clothes) and so I've made several fun, bright
butcher style aprons (one in alphabet fabric, one with kittens and puppies, another in a school motif and some seasonal ones) and I take one with me so that if painting or other messy work is involved, I'm covered (literally). I also teach in highschool and I find that being well dressed there (always a suit - pants or skirt, but always a jacket) helps command some initial respect. I do feel that to enhance my image as a professional, how I dress is part of the package. I live in Canada, where we have to deal with weather as hot as Florida some of the time and several feet of snow 6 months later!
