Did you make sure that when you were putting the pictures onto Movie Maker, you took them from the place where you saved them on the computer or did you accidentally take them from the flash drive and put them into Movie Maker? I encountered these problems,too when I first started using movie maker. As you noted, they do have to be on your computer first in order to use. Please don't take this advice the wrong way it's just sometimes it's these little errors that can drive you crazy!
For imacacher: you have to save the pictures onto your computer (I save in My Pictures) before switching memory cards or those pictures won't exist.
