When subs are needed By Carolyn

When I subbed, I found that the beginning of the year was the slowest. I think the reason for this is because teachers are fresh and renewed from the long summer break and don't feel compelled to take off. Also, they are| trying very hard to get schedules, procedures, and routines worked out with their kids. The beginning of the year is not really a good time for a full-time teacher to be out, so they try not to be out at that time if it can be avoided. Things began to pick up for me the month after school started. Flu season began (in Pennsylvania) in November and December, which increased the number | | of days I worked. Things slowed down a bit in January, again because of a break for the teachers. They picked up slightly in February, then more in March. April and May were hectic months to sub--I worked every day--because the teachers were wearing out and taking off their three personal days. (I am a full-time teacher now and I can tell you that it does seem like a long haul from Christmas to Easter. You really do need that sanity break day.) June was really much slower. Teachers are busy finishing up with their kids and are doing so many "fun" things at that time. School is about out now and the teachers feel that they can wait until school's out to take a day off. Also, by June, the majority of them have taken off their three personal days. I hope this has helped.
