I LOVE all the ideas that have been posted! One thing my children love in the summer is anything involving water! They love having paintbrushes and bowls of water and "painting" the house (outside, of course!) Maybe that's
too young for a 10 yr old but what about a slip-n-slide? I had one of those as a kid & used it everyday! Or just a garden hose and washing the car or bike or driveway... What about water wars - using the hose and/or water balloons or water guns?

I really like the garden idea - we've done simple flowers before but I just had my garden made ready for some serious planting and

I'm going to have my kids help me - even the little ones can dig!

My friend just built a simple tree house for his son out of scrap lumber, rope, and a few nails. It's not fancy at all but his son loves it. a 10 year old would be able to help put something together & that would make the process fun.

just wanted to add a few ideas!
