subbing and getting a job By Carolyn

I would definitely follow up on the applications. I would call the district and speak with the Personnel Office secretary and say something like: "Hello, my name is ______. I have just placed an application within your| district. I would like to know if any positions have come up and when you may be interviewing for teaching positions." I did this all of the time when I submitted applications. They don't really mind your call, in my experience; they are used to it. Your school district secretary should give you a response about probable openings and the dates in which interviews may be scheduled. She | | may even ask you to call the principals to set up the interviews. It varies from school district to school district. I found that in PA, you had to schedule your interviews through Personnel. Down here in NC, we call an employment hotline, then call the principal of the school which is interviewing to set up an appointment. You should check with your individual districts to find out their policy. As for subbing, this is a great way to make yourself visible within a district. I have known many subs who have been hired. If you do sub, "kiss up" to the principal and he/she will give you a job. Competence is important, but even more important is being charismatic within the workplace.
