I always have them follow up their reading with a short writing piece (a graphic organizer, outline, notes). :)

The emphasis is on showing what they got out of the reading ~ it's not a writing activity. ;)

Also, I have them use text references; so, if I doubt that they are accurately getting it ~ I can easily check up on them. :)

This system works for me ~ I love it! :D
