Teaching first

Clip to ScrapBook
As a first grade teacher, I can say that I definitely would NOT give up independent reading time. This is what I strive for when I teach the reading lesson (mini-lesson if you will in Reader's Workshop). It is what the kids learn that they CAN do!

I don't know if you are asking the question because of time constraints or if you just want to know which we value as the most important. I do think that partner reading gives the students a chance to talk about the reading, discuss the teaching points, as well as READ with the partner. I do a lot of "turn and talk" about a teaching point, comprehension skill, etc. that I am teaching during the reading meeting.
