that our most important job as reading teachers is to create independent readers, and research supports that readers who read well read A LOT! So, I would say that independent reading should be a bigger percentage of your day, assuming you are teaching children who already have "learned to read" and are beginning to "read to learn." However, I am thinking of my LS or ELL students who may need that help from a partner as well. I do have a few who would simply sit and stare at the book if asked to go at it independently. That's why I mentioned giving a choice. I think the partner/independent combinations you described can work in the right setting. Give it a try and see how it works! Sometimes you have to experiment to find what's best for your students!
