I received no training from the district I sub in. However, My student teaching gave me alot of training. My cooperating teacher was out for six weeks. My supervisor did not want to reassign me.
As far as I know there
is no orientation for subs.

Observing in the classroom for a day or two would probably benefit those who have neither taught or been certified.

I would offer workshops for subs on teacher conference days. My district has two per year plus a teacher orientation the day before school opens in Sept. If the subs were paid for the day I would require their presence. In addition I would

offer a packet of information to include the districts policy on discipline, parent contact, etc. The first time a sub comes into a school they would be handed a packet with up to date information about discipline, detention, practices (no students in halls) time out, referals, teacher duties.

For middle school students starting the class with a set of my expectations and rules. This lets the class know that I am organized and have experience at this job.

My biggest problem is discipline, discipline and discipline. An outgrowth of the administrations lenient policy on discipline.

Lack of respect from administration. See above answer.Used to be few opportunites for mom's to work. That is no longer true, Also, You tended to resign when you had a family and would start subbing as a path back to a regular job. In my district subs are passed over for full time positions. I find that I have the respect of my fellow teachers. I know them well as I sub in only one school.

Teachers who have left work that continues what the students have been doing. Many times I have been notified in advance that the teacher will be out and I am able to discuss what will be done. The students know that the work will count. Especially if I check to see that they have their homework. Conversly, my worse days are those where the students know the teacher just throws the work out.

I will be beginning my fifth year as a sub in this school. I sub there over 100 days a year as well as run an after school activity.

My policy is to do what the teacher leaves and they appreciate this. I often have to turn down teachers because I have promised another I would sub for THEM.
