machine calling
By Carolyn

Clip to ScrapBook
When I first began to sub, a person called me. Later, it was a machine, so I can compare the two.

When a sub caller calls you, you have the ability to discuss the assignment with her. For example, she once called me for
a special education classroom. If I hadn't spoken with her first, I would have found out that I was treading in an area I didn't feel comfortable with. It was for the severely handicapped. I declined, since my area of certification is elementary, and I haven't had any training in working with severely handicapped children. It also appeared to be true, as I have seen so much on this
board, that the sub caller will stop calling you if you keep refusing an assignment. I found that once I was very busy in one district, I declined the other. I was eventually no longer called by the other district.

Now the sub calling machine: I got called for stuff I didn't want to do, such as high school. The machine kept calling me for a certain high school. Somehow I was pegged for subbing in high school, even though I hadn't requested it on my sub application. My guess was that a HUMAN made the ultimate choice, somewhere along the way, not a machine. I figure that it was because of need. I called to ask that I not be placed in high school.
