Get a job at a law firm or something! Substitute teaching isn't much of a resume builder. You show up and pass out worksheets or show a movie.

But in answer to your question, I think any time of the year is ok to apply to be a sub. Just go over to the local school board and tell them: "Errr. Hi. I want to be a sub." Then they give you a whole packet. Getting fingerprinted and stuff. It's a royal pain. If you start now, you should be ready by September. Don't feel that it is too early.
