fussing, arguing, name calling...

I have subbed in a special education learning support classroom in middle school, so I am familiar to the type of students you are talking about. I think it is important for you to remember that this age group of students
is probably the toughest to get through to--let alone teach. Add to that it is a special education classroom where giving attitudes and respect is not always a concern for students and you have a sometimes volitile situation.

Keeping in mind the general characteristics of students in these grade levels, I think you should first start off by ignoring the behavior. You may have to ignore

it several days before it comes an issue. Also, in the time being, model for them the appropriate behavior and pick out instances where you can give them positive reinforcement.
If they are fussing in class maybe they need more work that needs to be done.
I understand what you went through.
