ants in pants

I know exactly what you mean! I taught on a middle school once where I received a sixth, a seventh, and an eighth grade class RIGHT AFTER THEIR LUNCH! Each one of those three groups was the most hyped up of all of my seven
groups of the day.

I always made sure I had a warm-up on the board, which was work which they were expected to compete the moment they sat down in their seat. I gave them a set amount of time to complete it, then I started RIGHT AWAY checking it. The total amount of time which had elapsed from entry to warm-up having been gone over was about ten minutes. I walked around the room

to be sure that every kid had the warm-up completed. If he/she didn't have it completed, then I gave him/her a zero for the warm-up for the day.

As a sub, I am sure that you can do this. Your regular teachers are probably required to do something like a "bell-ringer"/warm-up at the beginning of the class. Announce when they come in that you expect them to have everything completed and gone over in the first ten minutes of class. If they ignore you and continue talking, write down their names and turn them in to the regular teacher. Don't be afraid to be firm in insisting that they not waste time.
