I think your response is ok, since you have worked with kids so long. They weren't asking about a specific job - more of your occupation. Teaching is definitely your occupation.

For future reference, I like what GraceK suggested... "I teach XX graders." That way you answer their question without being at all dishonest.

I've always seen myself as a teacher, but I didn't start calling myself a teacher until my first year of teaching. During student teaching I called myself a student teacher, except in front of the students. Then I was a "real" teacher, for the sake of authority.
