Proud of Inner City Teachers By titansrst

I, too, teach at an inner city school, and I find most of the deprecating comments coming from people involved with more affluent schools. It's really not teacher versus teacher, because I believe most of us do have respect| for the others' work. But when you have media, government officials, college educators and many suburban parents putting us and our schools down every chance they get, you can understand why we feel under siege. Our schools may not perform as high on standardized tests, but their are many reasons, least of which being that our teachers are less capable than those in subrban schools. To | | be honest, I would not want to teach in a suburban school because of what I hear about soccer moms taking over classrooms, etc. There is truth to that, as I live in and have coached children from the suburbs for more than 30 years. But I see some fine educating going on at many of those schools. Yes, their efforts are boosted by their ability to secure more resources, but resources would be nothing without the fine educators leading the way. Things, however, will not change until the people making the major decisions in education are those who taught in classrooms most of their careers, not those who read a few books, talked to a few "experts" or are buddies with the superintendent.
