Teachers pick classes?

I've seen posts here on ProTeacher where teachers have said that they teach where the teachers choose who next year's teachers will be. They've complained that teachers give easy classes to their friends. I could see that happening. Our system is much like MommyTN where we fill out a form about who is high, medium or low and what special classes they go to. Then the principal divides them up, using our recommendations for kids who should not be together, as well as parent requests. I know there is potential for problems when parents are given a chance to request or ask not to have a particular teacher, but I've never heard of it being an issue with anyone. I think it all depends on the principal. Ours treats teachers with respect.
