Follow your gut

We had a few teachers do this when the Whole Language method was raging. They stuck with phonetic methods and did the polite nods to the administration. It turned out they were right.

If I were you (for my own peace of mind), I would look up the research for this method and others. You might be surprised to find that there is solid evidence against using it. It took years for the whole language thing to die even with solid research that it actually harms the reading process. BTW we still have a few teachers using whole language- my kids won't be in their classrooms.
