whole language
By mt

Clip to ScrapBook
has such an undeserved black eye--because so many teachers don't understand the first thing about it. It is untrue that whole language doesn't teach phonics. Whole language teaches phonics EXPLICITLY and if that isn't being
done, sorry folks, it's not whole language. WL believes in teaching skills in context, though, never ever in isolation, so that's where the no worksheets thing comes from. WL uses very few worksheets, because that's skills in isolation. WL uses whole pieces of literature (that's where the "whole" comes from) and that's why we eschew basals.

Believe it or not, WL is actually
what is endorsed and recommended by the NCTE and the IRA (International Reading Association). The very best parts of your literacy program started as WL strategies:

read alouds
word walls
book groups/lit circles

Please, please, please understand that whole language teaches phonics EXPLICITLY. I have a very, very WL classroom, and I promise you that you would not think my kids' reading or writing levels are low at all. Anyone who says not to teach phonics or says kids need to just repeat what they hear is NOT NOT NOT doing WL. A person who believes that kids just need to repeat what they hear is nutso.
