In my highschool they had a demerit system. Demerits could be given for any reason from talking out of turn to having a fight.(guns and such were handeled by our police officer not the school) Each demerit was equivlant
to 1 detention. students were given oppertunity to sign them. we could decide if and when to show up for detention. once we had 7 "unpaid for " demerits a letter was mailed to parents. and 10 was automatio suspention. If we went to detention the demnerit was taken off our record.
subs as well as regular teacher liked this system.
By the way any school official and the police officer

could give demerits.

Yes my school had its own on duty police officer. He had his own office there and we were allowed to visit him during certian times. it was actually cool and kept the school pretty safe.
