Jean Fritz has a lot of books that I used as a fifth grade teacher to teach about American History. We always schedule math and science together as a block b/c they can work well together (so I've heard). Since social studies| is basically memorizing, any recall game can help (Search Quiz Quiz Trade on PT). I also used pictures a lot to help them recognize the time periods and items from those times like the printing press, etc. I'd post it (question with a picture) on a magnetic board and have 3 answers (A B & C) and they'd go place a shape beside the one they thought was the correct answer. Later we'd | | analyze the choices as to why one was more correct than the other. We did map work where they had to label and color and that always took a while. I used a Daily Geography book. There was a mystery state of the day where they were given clues and had to guess which state it was, at the end of the week - 5 turned in equaled an A. I participated in the Great Mail Race b/c we were still learning about regions of the U.S. to some degree. They can always locate information from reference books (assign them the page and they read and synthesize) and then compile the information on the board as a class. Sort it into categories and tell them to write about it. Sing songs and create new words to old nursery rhymes to recall important parts of landforms. Can you tell I'm dreaming of 5th grade Social Studies. . . :) PM me with any questions. I hope we can share ideas next school year.
