literacy nights By merry heart
|
|
We just had a literacy night at our school last week. Our parent club sponsors it and helps with set-up and buys any materials we need for our stations. It's held in our multi-purpose room. We have lots of activities going| on and families can visit all or some of the stations they are interested in. Teachers and sometimes parents run them. We just set up tables all around the room, cover them with butcher paper to make it festive, etc. We had a bookmark creating station, a necklace- book station, poetry station, a continuing(add-on) type story, a station with word searches and word activities, etc. | | Our library was open with the librarian and others reading stories. A word bingo game was in one room with prizes. Oh, and our reading specialist had a parent session of how to help your child with reading with handouts for the parents. Usually we have a great turn-out, and the families have lots of fun. It needs lots of advertisement in advance and lots of help for set-up, running the stations, and clean-up. Also in the flyers for advertising be specific about the fun things that will happen--many parents don't get what a "literacy night" would involve and might think it will be boring. Our teachers put it in their weekly notes home as well to help advertise. Hope this helps!
