Physical Attacks
By Michelle

Clip to ScrapBook
We have been told that you are allowed to prevent the student from hurting you using approved non-violent physical restraint procedures. Under no circumstances should you hit back. My advice is to try to get certified through the Crisis Prevention Institute. They teach you how to keep a situation from getting that out of control and what to do if the situation does escalate to a physical level. If you follow their procedures exactly (and they do work!) they will pay your court costs and provide a lawyer if you are ever sued. My understanding is that they have never lost a case. I use physical restraint frquently (usually 3 or 4 time each week) in my current situation. Having the legal backing has made me a lot more comfortable this year.
