small school also By dvscott1

We are a small k-12 school in Northern Alberta and we previously were NUT FREE... (Our student was extremely allergic) this took extreme vigilance on the staff’s part to monitor what was going on. The student was in grade 2... Our problem was watching what the high school kids brought in from the stores at lunch... This became a full-time job because there is little separation as we share the chapel, we share the gym and many other common areas…
One thing we did try was absolutely no food in any area other than designated areas, and the lunch rooms were washed down after each meal. (We have | | a breakfast program also) We also had an information session for the parents where we had the parents of the student (his dad was one of our teachers) the epi-pen was kept in 3 places and on on the supervisor on the playground when he was out on recess... and a health nurse and administration addressing concerns... It worked well and most parents were receptive...
However, we found one issue that came up was peanut butter is a cheap source of protein and are school has low socio-economic families that rely on this as a staple...
This family has since moved away and we have removed this “ban”… we were later told that an all out ban was not as easy (legally) as it sounds. We were lucky but it has made many of us more educated and aware of this issue…
