-tested the joy and purpose out of learning by forcing teachers to teach to a test especially in lower socio-economic areas where kids come in with multiple disadvantages -worsened drop-out rates which are between 50% and 70% in many urban areas -pushed teachers to teach, and students to learn, developmentally inappropriate skills like how to write an essay in second grade -further increased a climate in which learning is competitive, when in fact schools aren't, and shouldn't be, run like businesses and students aren't, and shouldn't be, treated like widgets
