A while back I bought some how-to books on writing children's books (The Business of Writing for Children and Writing Children's Books for Dummies) because I had similar aspirations. They were quite useful because they covered all aspects of writing, from conception to publishing. Publishing is an art in itself, and as my cousin, who is a successful author, can tell you, writing is the easy part. Be prepared to get many many many rejection letters before someone may pick up your book.
