Our librarian is seriously the heart of our school. EVERYTHING goes through her... of course, this is because she is so amazing and wants so much to help teachers connect children with books. Our library
is so joyful, colorful, and ever-changing. When I went to school, you took out a book or two until your next library time. In our school, she loves when kids pop in and out all day because they've read their book and they want another. I never have to feel guilty sending kids at any time for any reason, so the library becomes a true resource. Like kat, I would love to be a librarian.

Have you ever read How to Get your Child to Love Reading? by Esme Codell? She also wrote a diary of a first year teacher, but after that year of teaching, she became the most dynamic, zany librarian ever. Her book is chalk full of her creative ideas and how to do them-- like character parade and library sleep overs and author studies, etc... etc.. etc... It's a really thick handbook of lists and lists and lists of books that go together, also. I really recommend it!

I think that your staff will look at the library largely however you decide to paint it. If you take it and make it the center/hub of the school, exuding an excitement for books and reading, then they will respect you and support you as a professional. Have FUN!!
