Vocabulary question...

I know this is a little off topic...but what are some ways you introduce vocabulary? In the classrooms I've been in I've seen it two ways. The teachers usually talk/discuss the meaning of each word. The 2nd way is before they even introduce or discuss the vocab, the students look-up the words in the glossary and write them down. Any suggestions would be nice to know. :)
