My own kids did something similar

When my own kids were younger, their school switched classes for reading and math by ability groups in second and third grade (k-3 school). They were with their homeroom teacher for everything else. I didn't like it. They are young and sometimes they would forget something in their homeroom. I also don't think that they had the same connection with their homeroom teacher. That school no longer does this in second grade. (now a k-2 school.)
