In my other life (before I became a teacher :D) I worked in the healthcare field. Our clinic had a plant service and when they would come to replace the trees and other plants we would be allowed to take the "old" ones. Once I got a really cool tall cactus that lived for quite some time. I'll have to remember to try your suggestion for calling the local plant supply company...I had forgotten all about it (it was a looooong time ago ;)) until I read your post.
