Maybe make an effort to ask him first - "How was your night? Did you do anything exciting or was it just a quiet night?" Give him the attention before he seeks it through lies and stories. Keep him focused on reality. I would also suggest getting serious about conferencing with the father, getting the school counselor involved. He is going to develop a repuation of being unreliable and untrustworthy.
