rough day By Carolyn

First of all, I would have not allowed the boys so many opportunities to misbehave. I am not criticizing you; I am just trying to give you some helpful advice. I am a full-time teacher with several boys who COULD act the| way you described yours, but I put my thumb on them right away. I subbed, too, years ago, and you are not powerless as a sub. Get the disruptive kids out as soon as they misbehave. Don't allow this to carry on. Tell them firmly the FIRST time they misbehave that they will leave the classroom if they continue. Of course, it depends upon the severity of their offense. Talking isn't | | a major offense, but the other stuff was downright disruptive. I kick disruptive kids out of the classroom. If they come back after time-out in another teacher's classroom and continue to act up, I write a referral and send them to the office. I have done this a number of times this year. Check with your principal. I am sure that he values your services and wants you to be happy and return to his school. He probably DOES want to know when the sub is having difficulty with a class. As for your school secretary, ignore her. I have been around enough school secretaries to know that they think they run the place. Well, they don't. You are the professional. You do what you think is right for the kids. Your business with the kids wasn't any of her business.
