What is the purpose of a grade?

I guess you have to examine your philosophy of grades. I have gone to grade conferences with students, where I have their grades, samples of their work and a grade rubric for us to discuss. We take a look at their work
from the entire grading period and talk about the amount of improvement that was seen, the effort that was put in, etc. This worked fantastically, and the parents really liked it. If they had a problem with a grade, they asked their student first and their student could tell them exactly why they got that grade. It eliminated a lot of calls to me, and helped students realize that they
are in charge of their grades-not me. If your school gives you that flexibility, I highly suggest it. It's so easy to incorporate with portfolios-just takes some thought in advance so you're collecting the work for students to examine.
