Clip to ScrapBook
I teach middle school and have done it once or twice only if the student has been demonstrating full effort in completing the task. Let's say that the unit is American History. I do not grade every assignment from every unit.
So what I will do is substitute a great assignment for a mediocre/incomplete one for this student.

This decision isn't based on behavior but effort. I have been shocked when some students who I thought were truly trying their hardest had 68s. If the unit is American history, let's say their are 10 assignments and I grade the 5 essential ones. The student may complete all the
nonessential assignments but half of the essential ones. Some of the time, their grade is low b/c they are forgetful, which I know isn't my responsibility but it should lead to their D or F. For example, student A can turn in crappy work for 50%, but student B did great work (as I see when going around the room), but b/c she didn't turn it in, she gets zero.

I don't consider myself "cheating" because I am still grading student work. The only thing I have done is "reclassified" it by objective/task.
