Wow! I can't believe the support and the terrific ideas that I am getting from everyone. I think it is interesting that the personal touch is an important part of the success between a substitute and the class. Tracci, you
mentioned introducing yourself to the students which is key, I think. Maybe if they see you as a person, they won't think of you as an opportunity to misbehave. Sharon, you mentioned writing a letter to the class and thanking them for having you...what a nice positive connection. I know a teacher who says very negative things to his class...you know... things like "This is the worst class
I have ever had!" It is no surprise that the kids live up to that. He has created a "me against you" scenario. I think your letter expresses your respect for the students and your faith that they will be respectful as well. Kids need to hear this!
I work with two other teachers in a team and we help each other out just as you described, Suzanne. The students know that if they get a second warning in one of our classes they will be sent to one of the other rooms for the remainder of the period. They hate that and then generally toe the line. It's a perfect way for teachers to help one another!
