For regular writing time I have made them Word Books we use for many different things. In the front we have an ABC section where the kids write our word wall words for each week. These are the "no excuse" words they should always be getting correct. We also have these words on our big word wall. I also a section in these books that have things like classroom words, our class list with first names, teachers names, subject names, etc., a page with the months of the year and the days of the week, colors, number words to ten, basically what ever words they tend to use the most. The third section of these books are the kids dictionaries. I have made a grid with two columns. The first column is called My Try and the kids have to try the word they need help with in this box. Once they have done this they can ask for help spelling the word in the Dictionary Spelling column. I call it Dictionary Spelling b/c this is how you would find it in a dictionary. They are allowed to ask for three words a day. This has helped the kids really think about what words they want help with each day. Here is the my try file page
