This practice has been called "tracking" and is actually detrimental to the lower end students. We try very hard to place an equal number of students in high, middle, lower, levels in each classroom. I didn't know any schools still did this? Let's say you had a low reader who was talented in math? Or a student who really struggled in math but was a gifted reader? I have seen programs where some students with similar needs are grouped together, but in a class with all learning levels. http://www.nasponline.org/about_nasp/pospaper_ag.aspx Even the National Association of School Psychologists | | is not in favor of tracking. This article is fabulous. It provides research and results on tracking or "ability grouping". http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/content/cntareas/math/ma1group.htm This post will probably be moved, but for now...it is food for thought!
