You'd Be Surprised

Clip to ScrapBook
Kids are kids are kids, no matter where they live, and in what surroundings they find themselves. I grew up in the upper middle class suburbs of Washington, DC with children of wealthy doctors, lawyers, politicians and diplomats.
I student taught the children of farmers at a rural school. I taught in the inner-city in DC, the middle class to wealthy neighborhoods of Jacksonville, FL, and am now back in the inner city.

There are great experiences in each socio-economic group. But, I've worked with kids who ate 2 meals a day (the ones they got for free at school) and lived in shelters, and I've
worked with kids who wanted for nothing, silver spoon in hand. And the one thing I've learned, kids are the same no matter what they have or don't have. Their problems may be different, but ultimately, they just want to know that you respect and love them, and that you want the best for them.

Don't give up! You really can learn an awful lot by interning in an urban environment.
