Thanks for your reply- here is some more info. My TA is probably mentally ill- just based on her behavior. Our TA's are teaching assistants- as opposed to teacher assistants- they are expected to teach small groups, pull
kids for remediation, work with higher level students when they have the new concept to keep them moving forward. All of the TA's on my grade level have excellent discipline, are very self-motivated and proactive. My TA refuses to do anything without extremely explicit, written directions- directions that I don't have time to write out on a several times per day basis. Often, she goes to
sit at her desk and falls asleep. She refuses to work with students when I need her to assist. For example, three weeks ago, I gave an poetry assignment. The kids were writing a poem about an animal- choosing precise, deliberate language. I asked my TA to help me monitor and walk around the room. She said she would- then sat down at her desk and began writing her own poem.

The problem may be solved- she requested a transfer for the next school year today. She said she does not like working in a "white minority" school. Then she went to a meeting at a local college that is offering courses to help assistants become certified!!!!! (Last Friday, while watching my kids at dismissal time, one of them walked off and was on the opposite end of a parking lot before she realized what had happened- then didn't know what to do!). In the winter, if we had a two hour delay, she would call me at home to ask me what to do. Her year end evaluation is coming up, and I need to be extremely careful how I word things on it- because her brother is the president of the local school board and I don't want to get myself on his bad side! I need to be able to state that she is not doing her job effectively. Hopefully, she will transfer and I will get a new, peppier assistant.
