main idea lesson

I have been working on main idea. The best thing that I have done is I use a graphic organizer with an umbrella (for the main idea) and 4 rain drops underneath the umbrella for the details. The students are given a choice of a few topics such as....my favorite school subject is...I am really good at....They write their paragraph after filling out their organizer and then I use a rubric to score it. Hope this helps! We start our state tests tomorrow and I'm dreading them. Our test security has become so rigid and strict, it's scary!
