There are good aspects of both.

Clip to ScrapBook
This is my first year of teaching 2nd graders after many years of first. I have always loved teaching 1st grade because I love teaching beginning readers and because you see so much growth in first grade. It so exciting
to watch! On the other hand, I have found that second graders are so ready to learn about the world and history and current events. They want to know everything and are ready for more complex ideas and discussions which is neat. We had an awesome discussion this past week on democracy and the Right of Free speech and about what has been going on with the protests in Tibet regarding the
Olympics in China. Also they are beyond the beginning to read stage (most of them, anyway) and are ready for higher level discussions and comrehension strategies. And their writing really takes off! I am amazed at the kinds of stories they produce. They are able to really apply what they see in their reading and use it in their writing. So it really depends upon what you are looking for. You cannot go wrong with either grade. They are still young enough to be kind and caring and excited about learning. I also taught kinder for a few years and I do not think I would go back after having first and second. I love the little ones but I enjoy having children who are more independent.
